LEV (local exhaust ventilation) testing

Performance testing and inspection of LEV (local exhaust ventilation) or dust and fume extraction systems for regulation 9 of the Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations 2002 (COSHH).

Every employer who provides engineering equipment to control substances hazardous to health has a legal requirement to examine and test this equipment in order to comply with Regulation 9 of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002.

The employer must ensure that local exhaust ventilation (LEV) equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair and shall ensure that thorough examinations and tests of the engineering controls are carried out at least once every 14 months.

Every employer must keep a suitable record of the examination and tests for a period of not less than 5 years. This record should also include any repairs that are carried out as a result of the thorough examination and test.

Working Environment Testing Services will carry out a Thorough Examination and Test on any type of LEV equipment. The purpose of the examination is to provide an assessment of the dynamic performance and condition of the local exhaust ventilation system. This test and inspection should be carried out at regular intervals, 14 months or less. The test and examination will provide sufficient information to satisfy the requirements of the regulations and should include at least the elements listed below.

Key Benefits

  • 33 years experience in the pollution control industry

  • Comprehensive in depth reports written by engineers who understand client requirements
  • Full statutory record keeping responsibilities to ensure COSHH compliance
  • Peace of mind in the knowledge that your LEV systems are covered by a professional and independent company
  • A totally safe approach to all aspects of LEV testing
  • Quality assured cost effective solution to ease the burden of statutory compliance

What is LEV

LEV or local exhaust ventilation is a means by which airborne substances are controlled and removed in order to prevent exposure to people in the work place

An LEV system usually consists of a fan, air cleaner, ducting and hood. The hazardous substance is captured from source by means of a hood, booth, cupboard or enclosure. The substance is then carried away in a ducted air stream generated by a fan to an air cleaning device such as a filter, scrubber, cyclone etc.

Our experience in the examination and testing of LEV equipment covers many differing configurations from any manufacturer, a list of the main types of LEV systems is:

  • pulse or reverse jet fabric dust filter
  • reverse air fabric dust filter
  • cassette and cartridge dust or fume filter
  • fabric shaker filter
  • wet collectors
  • cyclones and multi cyclones
  • electrostatic precipitators
  • absorption filters
  • clean room ventilation
  • fume cupboard
  • down flow booths
  • paint spray extract booths, wet or dry
  • welding fume extractors
  • vehicle exhaust fume extractors
  • straight through solvent and fume extractors
  • air conditioning units
